SARATOGA SPRINGS – Richard Blanco, SPAC’s Visiting Artist and the Presidential Inaugural Poet for President Barack Obama visited the SPAC School of the Arts for interactive poetry workshops on Saturday, March 19.
Approximately 40 children ages 6-13 participated from the St. Catherine’s Center for Children, Boys and Girls Clubs of Schenectady, and Girls Incorporated.
Richard saw the performance pieces (works in progress) that were inspired by his previous visit on Feb 12, under the guidance of our SOTA faculty.
Richard worked with the students to create descriptive language about senses, feelings and emotions that are evoked by a personal object, using his poem “Looking for the Gulf Motel” as inspiration. Children brought photos of pets, family members, special toys, momentos, etc. to draw inspiration for their writing.
Their pieces weave spoken word with dance, music, and theatre – challenging students to think creatively and to deepen their understandings of these art forms and their interconnectedness.
On Saturday, they shared their pieces with each other, in celebration of the end of the winter session.
The spring session of the Creative Connections program begins on Sat, April 2 and runs for 8 weeks, until May 28.
