Music, Mingling and The Process of Progress

Saratoga Re-opens: Music and Mingling – Tuesday, 6/8/2021

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Wandering around 550 Waterfront with an eerie feeling of comfort. So this is that Deja vu I heard about…

“Hi, I’m Rip Van Winkle. I just woke up, and I’m here to take your picture…” No need to explain to anyone on this night – Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at the 11th Annual Music + Mingling benefitting the Saratoga Senior Center – for it was the epitome of shared belief. Here we are again. But, no way was this a case of “same as it ever was.”

No, everyone had been through too much. And even though this was a joyous evening of pre-quarantine acquaintances renewed, you couldn’t help overhear conversations tinged with phrases like “he would have loved this” and the like. Remembering those we lost is going to be a part of our process of moving forward, of re-opening.

Before we get to the gallery, I want to make a few points:

  • First and foremost – The Directors and Board at the Senior Center had hard calls to make, under the shifting guidelines that existed at the time. You don’t put an event like this together in a few days, and one would have easily forgiven them if they went with a virtual event, or even bagged the whole thing this year, as other not-for-profits have done.

In the end, when they reached that point of “Go/No Go,” they opted to pick up the mantle they had earned as “Saratoga’s Kickoff Event” once again, and work within the capacity guidelines that were dictated to them (250, which they were slightly under). This meant that attendance had to be limited to their sponsors and their guests, and not have a public outreach that would have easily doubled their attendance.

It says here that they made the right decision, blazing a path that others will have an easier time following. Kudos.

  • 550 Waterfront – WOW! Where have you been all my life?

What a magnificent job of renovation after their unfortunate fire! Even though the night was rainy 98% of the time, one couldn’t help gawking at the attention to detail, and of course – the prime location. It was my first trip since they rebuilt, and I want to go back tomorrow! And the next day, and the next…

  • Lastly, I consider it an honor to chronicle this event and those to come. It’s a privilege indeed to show off to the world the re-kindling of Saratoga’s giving spirit. Having said all that, Let’s Mingle! Enjoy the gallery.
