Special Online Programming and “Derby at Home” celebration

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will present two online Zoom programs related to the Kentucky Derby, as well as launch a special “Derby at Home” section on the Museum’s website, to help racing fans plan for the 147th running of the “Run for the Roses,” which will take place May 1 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
Kicking off Derby week on Monday, April 26, the Museum will host a Zoom program featuring trail-blazing jockey Diane Crump and author Mark Shrager. Crump and Shrager recently teamed up for the book “Diane Crump: A Horse Racing Pioneer’s Life in the Saddle.” In 1969, Crump became the first woman to ride in a pari-mutual race in the United States. The following year, she made more history as the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby. Crump rode through 1998, winning 228 races, according to Equibase. She also rode internationally in Puerto Rico and Brazil. The book (https://racingmuseum.mybigcommerce.com/diane-crump-a-horse-racing-pioneers-life-in-the-saddle/), which was recently named a semifinalist for the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award, is the second release related to racing by Shrager, who previously authored “The Great Sweepstakes of 1877: A True Story of Southern Grit, Gilded Age Tycoons, and a Race That Galvanized the Nation.” The program will begin at 1 p.m. and will be moderated by Brien Bouyea, the Museum’s Hall of Fame and Communications Director.
