Blue Streak Gymnasts Get Green Light!

Modified Season Begins January 3rd.

These Senior Streaks Mean Business! L to R: Ava Dallas, Megan Wishart, Sophia Damiano.

SARATOGA SPRINGS – For the Saratoga Springs High School Gymnastics Team, nothing rings truer this season than the old adage “Better Late Than Never”.  While “high risk” scholastic sports are still on hold due to COVID-19 concerns in New York state, “moderate risk” sports like gymnastics were given the green light to begin on December 14th.  The gymnastics season for the Blue Streaks begins in earnest on Sunday, January 3rd, with a charity fundraising meet at World Class Gymnastics Academy (Latham) in support of Hatsgiving, an organization that provides soft, warm hats for children who have lost their hair while battling cancer.

The season meet schedule (below) is condensed and will end by February 28th.  Unfortunately, the NYSPHSAA has cancelled the state gymnastics championships which were to be held on Saturday, February 27th, in Buffalo.  As a result of the state meet cancellation, Section II has also cancelled the sectional championships and thus this season will focus on Suburban Council league action only between Saratoga, Bethlehem, Guilderland and Shaker.

Saratoga Gymnastics, which has won 19 straight Section II gymnastics titles, looks to be a juggernaut again this season with the top three all-around finishers from the 2019-2020 Section II gymnastics championships returning this year in senior Sophia Damiano (1st place all-around), senior Ava Dallas (2nd place all-around) and junior Carly Ruschack (3rd place all-around).  Damiano and Dallas have placed in the top three all-around in Section II gymnastics in all three years they have competed for the Blue Streaks.  The duo also currently share the Section II vault record (9.475).  Senior Megan Wishart, sophomore Erika Sudigala, freshman Angelina Damiano, freshman Katie Henry, freshman Charlie Gleeksman and 8th grader Lily Sica are all expected to contribute to the team’s success.  Newcomers to the team Maddie Austin (8th grade), Grace Agati (8th grade), Alex Endres (8th grade), Felicia Cioni (7th grade) and Gia DiMaggio (7th grade) have been working hard on their skills and learning what it means to be a Saratoga gymnast.

As a safety precaution, competitions this year will be held at two bubble locations (the Wilton YMCA and World Class Gymnastics Academy).  Teams will not compete at the same time but will rather have staggered start times in order to reduce the potential for COVID-19 exposure.  Social distancing will also be enforced, and gymnasts must wear masks at all times when not competing.  During a routine, a gymnast can place the mask under her chin but must return the mask to her face once the routine is over.  No spectators will be allowed at the competitions.
