The Trail-Blazers

Death Wish Coffee Co.’s Corporate Workday Assists Saratoga PLAN to Provide New Trails for All to Enjoy!

BARKERSVILLE – In this remote hamlet, straddling the Galway/Providence town line (exact GPS coordinates 43.068461 -74.024196,) a new trail is coming to life. When complete, it will traverse some 168 acres of Saratoga County’s most lush, natural beauty – on land acquired by Saratoga PLAN (Preserving Land and Nature) – and when finished, it will be a significant addition to our County-wide trail system.

Boulder Moving: Many hands make lighter work

Trail clearing is slow, labor-intensive work – done by hand and with small tools. It also is the essence of a team-building exercise, which is what brought out a contingent from Death Wish Coffee Co. and Saratoga PLAN on Saturday, October 19, to this remote area of the County.

“We’re always looking to contribute and give back, but this is the first time we’ve gotten our hands dirty doing so!” Remarked Kristine Wheeler, Customer Service Representative at Death Wish, “I definitely got sore, but it was beautiful! I received really good feedback from those who participated. The guys on the crew out there were definitely in their element, and everyone is hoping to do it again.”

Death Wish’s community involvement extends into many local areas – in addition to supporting PLAN (on this day and at The feast of the Fields last September, ) they have participated in the annual Toys for Toga drive; supported St.Jude Hospital and has “given back” in several other ways.

You know they brought the coffee!
Installing trail markers

On this day, which lasted from 9 am – 2 pm, the crew, which included family members from Death Wish and PLAN, were able to clear about a half-mile of trail – they moved boulders (some so heavy that it took the efforts of four people to move), cleared brush and installed trail markers along the route.

Alex Fylypovych, Community Engagement Manager for Saratoga PLAN, remarked, “We are thrilled to have committed community companies like Death Wish and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals with us for corporate workdays. We hope that they will join us again, along with other companies interested in team-building and ‘giving back,’ in 2020.”

Companies or individuals who are interested in trail clearing workdays in 2020 should contact Michelle Hall at Saratoga or call 518.587.5554

Saratoga PLAN is a land conservation organization who’s mission it is to preserve the rural character, natural habitats and scenic beauty of Saratoga County so that these irreplaceable assets are accessible to all and survive for future generations
