Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar Begins its 12th Year!

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Commitment.
With the beginning of the 2019-20 school year, those students who will excel are those who adopt a routine that facilitates learning. For the incoming young scholars in Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar Program at Saratoga Springs High School (SSHS), that begins with a commitment to attend homework sessions every Tuesday after classes. Not only does this provide the structure to organize their upcoming week, they have the opportunity to meet with tutors, receive announcements of upcoming college trips and other special events.
The results of this program are self-evident. Now in its twelfth year, not only have graduates of the Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar program been accepted into college at an extraordinary high rate, but they frequently have their choice among several leading colleges and universities to attend.
How extraordinary a rate? Try 100%. That would be 84 out of 84 SSAS program graduates accepted into college over the past nine years!
This is a program that depends entirely on donations from the community. 100 percent of donations are spent on students, while the Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar Board covers all overhead costs.
Throughout, the importance of providing a structure, and adhering to it, cannot be underestimated. These future leaders of our society are given every tool needed for success – from real-world mentoring, help with admissions tests and college applications, and determining their fields of study.
But make no mistake: this is a two-way commitment. In the Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar program, much is given – and yet, much is expected.

And it all begins on Tuesday after class. While others get on buses and go home, these Scholars go to work:
“Our weekly mandatory homework sessions are integral to the success of the SSAS program. During this time, we touch base with the students as to how they are doing in their classes, keep them informed of upcoming events such as college tours, community service activities, etc., and offer them free tutoring in the four core subjects. This is a time when students may also approach us if they have any issues or need assistance with school supplies, college applications, etc. Having this weekly contact with our students ensures that we know what is going on in their lives inside and outside of school and keeps them accountable.”
– School Counselor Brandy Crary, Saratoga Springs High School
Through the years, it has been a privilege and an honor to watch these future leaders develop their plans with mentoring and guidance, and observe as those plans are executed. Observing a record of achievement that is replicated year after year. This is no accident. It may seem like magic, but it is not.
It is the result of hard work, and a proven program that has commitment at its core. And it is remarkable to see. I urge you to take a closer look at this program yourself.
